Home Economics and Science Activity: "QK Kitchen: The Sweet Chemistry of Blueberry Jam"

2026-05-14

On 14 May 2026, the Science Department organised an innovative and engaging activity entitled "QK Kitchen: The Sweet Chemistry of Blueberry Jam" for our junior secondary students in the Home Economics Room. Carefully designed by the Science Promotion Unit of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the activity aimed to guide students in uncovering the scientific wonders hidden in everyday life through the hands-on experience of making homemade jam.

Throughout the hands-on session, students not only witnessed the fascinating transformation of the jam from a runny liquid to a thick spread, but also gained an in-depth understanding of the chemical principles behind the interactions among pectin, sugar, and acidity (pH value), all under the careful guidance of the teachers of the Unit.

This year's activity featured a special addition: a mobile exhibition. While savouring the fruits of their own labour, students were able to appreciate, on a deeper level, the inseparable connection between science and daily life. We firmly believe that this activity has successfully transformed abstract textbook knowledge into a lively and enjoyable hands-on experience. Not only has it made science more accessible and easier to understand, but it has also filled our campus with a strong scientific atmosphere and the delightful aroma of freshly made jam!
