Science Activity: "Power Rocket Making Workshop''

2026-05-13

In order to ignite students' passion for scientific inquiry and to put classroom knowledge into practice, the Science Department, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Educational Equipment Industry Association (HKEEIA), organised an exciting and innovative "Power Rocket Making Workshop", allowing students to design, build, and launch their very own rockets, and to experience the boundless joy of science first-hand.

At the beginning of the workshop, professional instructors from HKEEIA provided clear and accessible explanations of the scientific principles behind rocket flight, covering core concepts such as Newton's Third Law of Motion (action and reaction), aerodynamics, thrust, as well as the importance of centre of gravity and stability. Once equipped with this theoretical foundation, students eagerly proceeded to the hands-on construction phase.

During the building process, students applied both creativity and careful thought as they cut out the rocket bodies and designed the shapes and angles of the fins, all in pursuit of optimal flight performance.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the much-anticipated rocket launch session. One by one, students mounted their handcrafted rockets onto the launch pad, and as the countdown began, the rockets soared into the sky amidst gasps of awe and resounding cheers. By observing the varying heights and trajectories of each rocket, students were able to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of their designs, thereby gaining invaluable insights into the process of scientific inquiry.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hong Kong Educational Equipment Industry Association for their professional support and high-quality resources, which made this workshop possible. The activity not only brought abstract physical principles vividly to life, but also cultivated students' problem-solving skills and willingness to experiment.
